So in case you couldn't tell, I got more than a few bits of stuff on my metaphorical plate. Full-time by day, Masters-level courses at night-- I'm the Stress Man! Sorry, Blog, that I've kept you waiting.
But it's the first of a new month, so at the very least I can give you my thoughts on what Best, Worst, and What The--?! covers Marvel has to offer for December.
First up: Strange #2, cover by Tomm Coker, on sale Dec. 3)
While I give a lot of credit for simplicity (take a look at Dark Avengers Annual #1 by Chris Bachalo), this cover instead has a nice balance between simple colors and complex shapes/shadows. I like the strong, dynamic boldness of the white smoke/energy, made more striking by the muted surroundings. Notice how your eye then gets dragged to the off-center magnifying glass because of the asymmetry. Altogether the piece works to evoke a chilling, mysterious tone with the promise of powerful and enigmatic forces at work.
