it's still summer, which means it's still Europe. But comics are still being published, and my blog must continue! I used to evaluate Marvel's covers each month at its beginning, but it's not too late to try for July!
Best July Cover:
Lots to like with covers this month, but there is a definite popular theme to have group shot of the team, usually in a triangular pattern in a nicely painted color. But one that really stood out for me was the pure design-quality of Hit-Monkey. Yes, Hit-Monkey. I know. (I love it!)
You'll notice the bold stripe moving diagonally with the distressed, random, but uniform bullet holes, and balanced diagonal of the differently-numbered men in suits. It's both striking and dynamic, giving a burst of visual energy and speed. Yet it's all centered into the focal point at the middle-- the strong contrasting color of red. Bonus points for being a face at center, too, with the nice touch of little bits of red around accenting the gunshot wounds. The highly rendered guns contrast as well to the graphic and simplified design and contrast. It's a great design to mark the first issue and gives a good indication of not only the content but also the MOOD inside-- that it's quirky, deadly fun. Good job, uncredited artist!
