In some ways, I'm more productive than I've ever been. I'm drawing a lot more than I used to, not sure why. It could be that there's no pressure to still think that I could get into the "industry," that was a time that has come and gone. Now I can just enjoy it without thinking that there has to be a reason for it, you know? That, and I guess I have a lot more free time now that I'm not hanging out with high schoolers anymore. (I kind of miss that, tho. I try to help out at church still, but it isn't the same.)
Anyway, one of the message boards I frequent has a long-running contest Comic Book Runway, where competitors' designs for comic book characters are voted on, reality-tv style. I've long since missed the sign-up for the contest, but sometimes I like to play along at home. One such design is this one: Hot-Headed Harley. The category was "In the Mix," where you mix up the designs of two characters from different comic book companies, DC (Superman, etc.) and Marvel (Spider-Man, etc.) In this case, I mixed up Harley Quinn (the Joker's sidekick) and Firestar (one of Spider-Man's 'Amazing Friends.') The in-joke is that both characters were created just for their respective animated shows, and only later appeared in actual comic books.
Here's another design for a similar contest, run by Project: Rooftop. This is a more legit contest, actually, since there's actual honest-to-goodness prizes involved. The challenge is to redesign nothing less than Superman himself. Let me tell you, it's a hard challenge! I took the design in a direction that suggests a more mythic-type hero, a real "strange visitor" beyond the mortal ken. In fact, that probably means that I won't get many points for it, since I'll bet the best design will be one that incorporates BOTH a mythical feel AND a small-town Kansas home-boy feel. I'm working on that, too, but in the meantime, I'm happy with this design. The pictures after it are some other concepts that I think might be worth exploring. They're a bit more inspired by football/sports uniforms, but I think that's why they end up more appropriate for SuperBOY. Which do you think I should submit for the contest?
