Is it that time already? Wow!
Check out this cover from Amazing Spider-Man Presents Black Cat #3. While other covers certainly showed some great figure studies and well-painted rendering, this cover shows how effective plain, stark graphics can be. The basic color palette is limited, both foreground and background, but remains distinctive, allowing the figure of the Black Cat to be well silhouetted. At first glance, the body gesture and attitude seem quite basic, but on closer look, there's actually some honest-to-gosh STORY being presented here, as the Black Cat is being prevented from driving away by a certain web-slinging wonder. It's subtle, but it turns an already-good cover into a brilliant one.
Hats off to Amanda Conner, one of my recent new faves. I hope she gets recognized for bigger and better projects as her career continues to shine!
